Compliance Node Overview
MITRE ATT&CK T1110.003 (Password Spraying) is an Enterprise Credential Access sub-technique of T1110 (Brute Force). Adversaries may use a single or small list of commonly used passwords against many different accounts to attempt to acquire valid account credentials. Password spraying uses one password (e.g. 'Password01'), or a small list of commonly used passwords, that may match the complexity policy of the domain. Logins are attempted with that password against many different accounts on a network to avoid account lockouts that would normally occur when brute forcing a single account with many passwords. Affected platforms: Windows, SaaS, IaaS, Linux, macOS, Containers, Network, Office Suite, Identity Provider. MITRE-documented mitigations include M1032 Multi-factor Authentication, M1027 Password Policies, M1036 Account Use Policies. The Center for Threat-Informed Defense maps this technique to NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 controls AC-02, AC-03, AC-05, AC-06, AC-07, AC-20, CA-07, CM-02.
