Compliance Node Overview
MITRE ATT&CK T1525 (Implant Internal Image) is an Enterprise Persistence technique. Adversaries may implant cloud or container images with malicious code to establish persistence after gaining access to an environment. Amazon Web Services (AWS) Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Images, and Azure Images as well as popular container runtimes such as Docker can be implanted or backdoored. Unlike Upload Malware, this technique focuses on adversaries implanting an image in a registry within a victim's environment. Affected platforms: IaaS, Containers. MITRE-documented mitigations include M1045 Code Signing, M1026 Privileged Account Management, M1047 Audit. The Center for Threat-Informed Defense maps this technique to NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 controls AC-02, AC-03, AC-05, AC-06, CM-02, CM-05, CM-06, CM-07.
