Compliance Node Overview
MITRE ATT&CK T1542.002 (Component Firmware) is an Enterprise Persistence and Defense Evasion sub-technique of T1542 (Pre-OS Boot). Adversaries may modify component firmware to persist on systems. Some adversaries may employ sophisticated means to compromise computer components and install malicious firmware that will execute adversary code outside of the operating system and main system firmware or BIOS. This technique may be similar to System Firmware but conducted upon other system components/devices that may not have the same capability or level of integrity checking. Affected platforms: Windows, Linux, macOS. MITRE-documented mitigations include M1051 Update Software. The Center for Threat-Informed Defense maps this technique to NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 controls AC-02, AC-03, AC-05, AC-06, CM-02, CM-03, CM-05, CM-06.
