MITRE ATT&CK T1556.005 (Reversible Encryption) is an Enterprise Credential Access and Defense Evasion and Persistence sub-technique of T1556 (Modify Authentication Process). An adversary may abuse Active Directory authentication encryption properties to gain access to credentials on Windows systems. The AllowReversiblePasswordEncryption property specifies whether reversible password encryption for an account is enabled or disabled. By default this property is disabled (instead storing user credentials as the output of one-way hashing functions) and should not be enabled unless legacy or other software require it. Affected platforms: Windows. MITRE-documented mitigations include M1026 Privileged Account Management, M1027 Password Policies. The Center for Threat-Informed Defense maps this technique to NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 controls AC-02, AC-03, AC-05, AC-06, AC-07, AC-20, CA-07, CM-02.
