Compliance Node Overview
Bhutan enacted the Information, Communications and Media Act 2018 (ICMA 2018), which includes provisions for the protection of personal information in electronic communications and digital services. The Act is administered by the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA). It requires ICT service providers and digital platform operators to protect user personal data, obtain user consent before collecting personal information for purposes beyond service delivery, implement security measures to safeguard personal data from unauthorised access, and restrict disclosure of user information to third parties. Data subjects have the right to access personal information held by service providers. The Act aligns with Bhutan's broader digital governance framework and the country's commitment to Gross National Happiness principles applied to the digital economy.
