What Directive 2009/41/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 May 2009 on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms (recast) requires
This Directive requires all EU member states to ensure that genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs) are used only under contained conditions that prevent adverse effects on human health and the environment. It mandates risk assessment, classification into containment levels Class 1-4, prior notification to competent authorities, and immediate reporting of accidents, as specified in Article 8 and Annex II.
