What MARPOL Annex IV - Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships requires
MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV regulates the discharge of sewage from ships, prohibiting discharge within 12 nautical miles of the nearest land except where the ship has an approved sewage treatment plant in operation or uses an approved comminuting and disinfecting system. The Baltic Sea is designated as a Special Area under Annex IV where stricter nitrogen and phosphorus discharge standards apply, effective from January 2019. Annex IV entered into force on 27 September 2003.
