The Nagoya Protocol requires users of genetic resources to obtain prior informed consent (PIC) from provider countries and establish mutually agreed terms (MAT) for benefit-sharing. It applies to all activities involving the utilization of genetic resources that fall under the scope of the Convention on Biological Diversity, as specified in Article 1.
