What United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 - Part II: Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone requires
This regulation establishes the legal framework for the territorial sea, extending up to 12 nautical miles from the baseline, where coastal States exercise sovereignty subject to the right of innocent passage under Article 17. It also defines the contiguous zone up to 24 nautical miles for enforcement of customs, fiscal, immigration, and sanitary laws under Article 33.
