What Canadian Human Rights Act - Prohibited Grounds, Employment Discrimination and Pay Equity requires
Canada's Human Rights Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. H-6) prohibits discrimination on the grounds listed in section 3(1): race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability and conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted or a record suspension ordered. Section 7 makes it discriminatory to refuse to employ or to differentiate adversely in employment on a prohibited ground; section 11 requires equal wages for work of equal value; and section 53 allows compensation up to $20,000 for pain and suffering and a further $20,000 for wilful or reckless conduct.
