What EU Groundwater Directive 2006/118/EC - Groundwater Quality Standards, Pollution Prevention and Trend Reversal requires

Directive 2006/118/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration (the Groundwater Directive, GWD) is a daughter directive of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. Article 3 establishes Union-wide quality standards for nitrates (50 mg/l) and active substances in pesticides including their relevant metabolites, degradation and reaction products (0.1 µg/l individual, 0.5 µg/l total). Member States must establish national threshold values for additional pollutants of concern under Annex II Part B. Article 4 sets the criteria for assessment of good chemical status of groundwater bodies. Article 5 requires identification and reversal of significant and sustained upward trends in pollutant concentrations. Article 6 requires measures to prevent or limit inputs of pollutants into groundwater, distinguishing hazardous substances (prevent) from non-hazardous pollutants (limit to prevent pollution). Directive 2014/80/EU amended Annex II Part B (minimum list of pollutants) to add nitrites and total phosphorus/phosphates. Commission Directive 2022/1733 of 9 September 2022 amended Annex II to update the minimum list of pollutants and the methodologies for setting threshold values.
