Section 51 makes general provision for long-distance routes enabling extensive journeys on foot, and section 59 provides for public access to open country. Section 87 provides for the designation of areas of outstanding natural beauty for the purpose of conserving and enhancing their natural beauty. The Act, as amended, remains the legal basis for the protected landscape and nature reserve framework of England and Wales.
