What US Space Policy Directive-4 (SPD-4) 2019 - Establishment of the United States Space Force requires
SPD-4 (signed 19 February 2019) directed the Department of Defense to establish the United States Space Force (USSF) as a separate military service branch. The USSF was formally established on 20 December 2019 by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020. USSF is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping forces for space operations including space situational awareness, missile warning, satellite communications, GPS, and intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
